Many years ago, it was predicted that machines would eventually take over the world by assuming human form. Isn’t that what’s happening right now? The planet is being overrun by robots. Well, it’s a bit extreme to say that, but let’s face it: with the rise of artificial intelligence and the increasing production and application of robots, there’s no denying that robots are becoming ingrained in practically every aspect of human existence and are here to stay.
South Korea is at the forefront of the global robotics revolution. South Korea has replaced 10% of its workforce with robots, making it a leader in the adoption of robots for human labor, according to a World Robotics 2024 report released by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). The country has 1,102 robots for every 10,000 employees. With 770 robots per 10,000 workers, Singapore is the only country that comes close.
The robot “population” in South Korea has grown by 5% annually as a result of the country’s developing electronics and automotive industries, which depend more on industrial robots. The Korean government is heavily involved in the introduction of more robots into various industries, including healthcare, hospitality, logistics, and even agriculture, so the rise in robot use is not just in industrial plants.
The Fourth Intelligent Robot Basic Plan, which aims to invest $2.4 billion in the robotics industry by 2030, was unveiled by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. This massive expenditure is not surprising because it is part of the Korean government’s plan to address the labor shortage brought on by the nation’s rapidly aging population and falling birth rates. According to the government, robotics is an essential instrument for addressing labor shortages in many industries and preserving productivity.
Even while South Korea is setting the pace for robot adoption, other nations are quickly following up. The global robot density has quadrupled in the last seven years, from 74 robots per 10,000 employees in 2017 to 162 in 2024, according to the World Robotics 2024 report.
This figure supports the growing worldwide trend of robot integration in a variety of businesses beyond national borders. For example, it has been reported that China, Japan, and India installed 2,76,288, 46,106, and 8,510 robots, respectively, in 2023 alone.
As I mentioned before, if the long-term useful advantages like higher productivity and efficiency are any indication, robots are here to stay. Naturally, however, as with anything that looks too good to be true, there are worries and anxieties, particularly with regard to how it may affect employment and human jobs.
Experts, however, think that rather than totally replacing human labor, robots will complement it. Robots free up human attention for more intricate, creative, and social jobs by automating hazardous and repetitive chores.
Indeed, a lot of people think that robots will open up new career paths, especially in the areas of invention, programming, and maintenance.
